Healthiest Halloween Candy

By  |

Halloween is the kick start to the fat fest that we call the holidays.  Exercising your willpower and self control here, will be a great start to a successful holiday season.
So what is the healthiest Halloween candy you ask?  The answer may surprise you… it’s… it doesn’t matter!
I keep seeing all of these articles pop up, telling you which candies are the best choices, the healthiest, the least fattening, etc., but not a single one of them says anything about portion control!  So what, Jolly Ranchers appear to be the “best” choice (least amount of calories per piece), but if you eat 10 of them it definitely isn’t anymore.  To add to that, why even waste your calories on something that isn’t your favorite?  I don’t want a Tootsie Roll because it only has 50 calories, I want that Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup!
So what do I do?
My rule is to have 1 piece of candy, whatever I want, but only 1!  Everything in moderation, right?  It’s Halloween, you can’t live life being so strict all the time and not enjoy tradition.  Why do I limit myself to just 1?  Because it’s too easy to overeat and then feel awful about yourself afterward.  You feel guilty for having no willpower and your tummy hurts, it’s just not worth it.  It’s not like the 2nd, 13th, 20th piece of candy even tastes as good as the first anyways.
You don’t even really want more candy, you just feel like you need more.  Did you know that sugar from the candy releases dopamine, a chemical in the brain which gives us a feeling of pleasure and makes you feel good?   Similar signals are given in the brain when doing heroin. >Enough said<
If you do not have the self control to only eat 1 piece of candy, just stay away from it.  Nobody NEEDS candy.  If you think you can handle it, enjoy your favorite piece and move on.  Feel good about your choices the next day.  You will be amazed at how proud you feel about yourself knowing that you are strong enough to choose progress towards your goals instead of derailing them.
To sum this up:
*Eat one piece of your FAVORITE candy
*Feel good about yourself afterward
Have you already had your candy binge?  Make better choices today and tomorrow and the next day…  No use in beating yourself up over something you can’t take back.  The next time you are given the opportunity to make that choice, make it a good one 🙂
I hope everyone has a happy and safe Halloween!
